Although the psychology of music has conventionally taken up perception, cognition, and emotion, experiencing has never been addressed, both in Japan and internationally. The aim of this study is to elucidate how experiencing occurs when pianists play music pieces from the time when they engage in a new piece to the time when they perform the piece in a concert. Six pianists were interviewed, and the interviews were studied qualitatively. The experience of pianists in understanding music pieces from the viewpoint of experiencing was articulated.
