People can experience committing a faux pas or being the center of attention when they try to help strangers in public. Since these situations can cause embarrassment, bystanders experiencing a high level of embarrassment would decide to not help strangers to avoid it. However, in Study 1, the result of the questionnaire indicated that the more likely people are to feeling embarrassed in committing a faux pas, the more they intend to help others, opposing the hypothesis. However, the result supported the hypothesis regarding being the center of attention. Therefore, in Study 2, a laboratory experiment was conducted to observe actual helping behavior, using the following two conditions: strong possibility of faux pas (Strong condition) and small possibility of faux pas (Small condition). The results were consistent with the hypothesis: in Small condition, participants feeling more embarrassed of faux pas tended to help more than participants feeling less embarrassed.
