| 内容記述 | Advances in network communication via the Internet are facilitating the exchange of information among foreign universities and colleges. The authors describe a pilot study involving electronic mail exchanges among students from three different locations: Kansai University in Osaka, Japan, and the University of Hawaii at Manoa and Windward Community College in Honolulu, Hawaii, USA The objectives of this activity were: to clarify the constraints and possibilities of using the Internet as a communication medium, and to change attitudes towards computers and increase awareness of the usefulness of computer networking. Nineteen students from Kansai University, eighteen students from the University of Hawaii, and eighteen students from Windward Community College participated in electronic mail exchanges from October, 1995 to January, 1996. The students were divided into eighteen groups, with each group having one member from each school. They sent e-mail to introduce themselves during the first stage and then exchanged e-mail more freely. At the end of the activity, the Kansai and Windward Community College students communicated by video conference. The frequency of e-mail exchange gradually declined after the initial stage. Some students reported that since they did not know what their partners looked like, it was difficult to identify suitable topics to discuss after the introduction stage. Others expressed concern over inadvertently hurting their mail partners by using certain words. Since the Japanese students did not know much about the Hawaiian culture, they did not discuss what might be considered sensitive issues. In conclusion, constraints and possibilities for network communication were identified. Although it is difficult for Japanese students to communicate with overseas students, Internet communication has the potential to enhance the educational experiences of students. | |||||
