Recent studies, however, have yielded inconsistent results regarding the effects of expanding spacing. This study conducted a critical review of\nearlier studies on expanding spacing. The review found that the study conducted by Landauer and Bjork (1978), which is often cited as evidence to support expanding spacing, has several limitations and does not necessarily demonstrate the value of expanding spacing for L2 vocabulary learning. This study also found that none of the studies examining the effects of expanding spacing on L2 vocabulary learning found the benefits of expanding spacing. Although several non-L2 studies have found the advantage of expanding spacing, the benefits were found only under limited conditions: (a) when the task difficulty is high, (b) feedback is not provided after retrievals, and (c) learning is measured by a posttest given within 24 hours of the treatment.
