 note = {This story concerns Philip Osborne's quest to avenge his best friend Robert Graham's suicide as a result of his unrequited love for Henrietta Congreve. Osborne learns about the incident from Mrs. Dodd who happens to stay in the same town as Graham. According to her, Graham commits suicide because his love for Henrietta Congreve was spurned. In addition, Mrs. Dodd implies to Osborne that Miss Congreve flirted with him. Hearing this， Osborne is determined to get revenge.
But by the end of the story, Osborne realizes that he has taken action and behaved based on the "reality" he has. He finds out that Miss Congreve is actually a good-natured, innocent young woman who had already been engaged prior to Graham's profession of love for her. She is in no way a deceitful woman. "Osborne's Revenge" is a representative of a prominent theme of Henry James: appearance vs. reality. The "reality" that Osborne accepted as true was merely an illusion.
