<datacite:description xml:lang="en" descriptionType="Other">Zhao Yuanyi and Ding Fubao are significant figures in the history of medical translation in modern China. Zhao Yuanyi, a translator at the Jiangnan Arsenal Translation Bureau, collaborated with the Western missionaries to translate medical texts, such as the Confucian Medicine. His translation approach exemplified the mostly Western traditional model prevalent in the late Qing Period. However, with the social reforms initiated by the Qing government following the First Sino-Japanese War, this traditional translation model gradually declined, and the Jiangnan Arsenal fell into obscurity. Concurrently, the Qing government promoted educational reforms, shifting toward adopting the Japanese new knowledge systems. Against that backdrop, Zhao Yuanyi’s student, Ding Fubao, sought to find his own place, eventually emerging as a representative of the new generation of medical translators.</datacite:description>
