<datacite:description xml:lang="en" descriptionType="Other">The environmental conditions of two archaeological sites in Egypt were discussed. One site is the excavating site which is located on the top and side of a hill in Abusir. Air temperature, air humidity, sunshine strength, precipitation, wind direction, wind velocity, and temperature of the surface and inside of stone were measured by a computerized measuring system. Since the site is located in typical desert area, it rains little and average humidity is low. However, diurnal variation of temperature and humidity is very large, and they are in inverse proportion. In such a condition, an extreme dew condensation occurs, which causes very rapid deterioration of the remains. In general, water is the greatest factor of deterioration of every material. Therefore, ancient remains can be well preserved in the underground of desert area where almost no water is supplied. Once the site is excavated, however, the remains are exposed to the atmosphere and suffer from the penetration of dew condensation water, which leads to rapid deterioration of the remains. The other site is the burial chamber of the mastaba of Idout in Saqqara. The burial chamber, in which ancient mural painting of the 24 century B.C. remains with fresh color, is fifteen meters under the ground. Temperature and humidity have been measuring at four points (outside and inside of the chamber) by using data loggers. It reveals that the temperature and humidity inside the burial chamber are extremely stable, which makes it possible for the mural painting to remain in a good condition.</datacite:description>
