<datacite:description xml:lang="en" descriptionType="Other">In the Nazi euthanasia program known as Aktion T4, people with disabilities or hereditary diseases who were deemed to be without hope of recovery were killed under the guise of ‘mercy death’. Doctors, particularly psychiatrists, played a crucial role in this process. Regarding to the literature that thematizes the Nazi period, there is often an emphasis on personal testimonies of survivors, and the perception that the Holocaust is inherently unrepresentable often leads to a reluctance to engage with fiction. However, in the framework of‘ 'remembrance culture’, it is necessary not only to show compassion for the victims but also to grapple with the culpability of the perpetrators, in the context of Aktion T4, the doctors involved. Fiction serves the purpose of shedding light on the perpetrators from their own perspectives, thus countering their simplistic demonization. In works such as Hugo and In Nacht und Nebel, doctors are depicted not only as perpetrators but also as those who resist Aktion T4. It is important to avoid unnecessarily glorifying this resistance by portraying it solely in a positive light. The resistance in these works ultimately ends in the murder of patients, providing a portrayal of the perpetrators that avoids both glorification and demonization. This demonstrates the potential contribution of literature thematizing Aktion T4 to the remembrance culture.</datacite:description>
