<datacite:description xml:lang="en" descriptionType="Other">This paper explores the grammaticalization path of the term “光景” in Chinese, particularly its evolution from a noun to an adverb and the semantic changes involved in the process. By analyzing a large number of documents from the late Ming Dynasty onward, this study reveals how “光景” evolved from its original concrete meanings of “light” and “scenery” to more abstract meanings, such as “situation” and “appearance,” and eventually becoming an adverb, with a sense of conjecture in specific linguistic contexts. The use of “光景” as a noun mainly appeared in the written classical Chinese, while its adverbial usage has become colloquial. Over time, the adverbial use of “光景” almost completely disappeared in Modern Standard Mandarin Chinese, which reflects the competition and selection mechanisms within the language system. Through corpus analysis, this paper examines the processes of semantic abstraction and syntactic reorganization that occurred during the adverbialization of “光景,” and discusses how the transformation happened during the Qing Dynasty and its ultimate decline in Modern Chinese. The findings indicate that the redundant forms in language are often eliminated due to the principle of linguistic economy, leaving only the most competitive forms. The evolution of “光景” not only demonstrates its complex developmental trajectory in the history of the Chinese language, but also provides new perspectives and evidence of the grammaticalization of the Chinese vocabulary.</datacite:description>
