At the beginning the writers introduce severaI documents and articles about social studies at that period. Those are consisted of \"the report of the committee for reforming to civic education (Komin Kyoiku sasshin iinkai toshin)\", \"the textbook of civic education for teachers (Komin Kyoshi yo syo)\", \"the course of studies 1947 (Gakushushidoyoryo)\", and several articles written by Syuichi Katsuta who was a government official of the Ministry of Education at that period. The present writers then argue that there was no principle for the unity of all individuals and society in those documents and articles, and this is the main cause that have led to confusion at later periods. The writers point out that we must now establish a new theory of social studies to create a new principle for the unity of individuals and society. Moreover, the writers discuss the basic theory of subject areas in social studies from several viewpoints, and try to clarify the relationship between curriculum of Japanese social studies at the immediate period after the World War II and of American social studies during the 1920\u0027s.
