| 内容記述 | In this paper, we surveyed William Milne's Chinese Monthly Magazine and William Muirhead's Universal Geography and carried out a textual and contentbased analysis of both works in relation to geography. Viewed through the lens of missionaries and missionary work, a detailed discussion is undertaken in relation to changes in European geographical nomenclature and differences in knowledge. Also, consideration will be given to methods of reading and writing European geographical place names, rules of translation, their relevance, relationships of inheritance, as well as the author's position in terms of etymology. First of all, the position of the two works and the purpose of both will become clear. Both William Milne and William Muirhead were missionaries from the London Evangelistic Association whose fundamental role was to carry out various missionary duties. From a deep analysis of segments of the text from the Chinese Monthly Magazine, it was found that not only the depiction of geography but also the connection of Jesus's doctrines can be found in the beginning of the whole sentence. However, William Muirhead does not refer to the doctrines of Jesus, but, instead, uses knowledge related to natural geographical features and terminology, such as the equator, points of latitude, and meridian, and utilizes the scientific methods of location, society, history, folklore, customs, regime, specialties of countries Introduced and more "objective, complete and content-oriented" from the Chinese Monthly Magazine, the description method is also concise and easy to understand. In Universal Geography, we introduce the main European countries to each reader according to the form of 'Zhi' and can also see the normality of the book and the systematic nature of the classification methods that are employed. In addition, the Western missionary William Milne is noted to have employed the lofty phrase "My China" to make Chinese readers accept the veracity of his writing. Meanwhile, in an article entitled "Great British Kingdom", Western missionary William Muirhead appeared to take a more neutral position and objectively introduced the British information. From the two works, the changes in European geographical place names have revealed the process of cultural integration, character and language transformation. It is believed that it took the core of cultural negotiation using two forms of language, character change and cultural integration. | |||||
